Your vehicle’s braking system is one of its most important safety features. Whether you’re slowing gently in traffic or stopping suddenly in an emergency, you need to know that your brakes will respond properly every time you press the pedal.

How Your Brakes Work
Most modern cars use disc brakes, with a brake disc attached to each wheel and brake pads held within a caliper. When you press the brake pedal, hydraulic pressure causes the pads to grip the disc, creating the friction needed to slow the vehicle.
Depending on the vehicle, rear brakes may use either discs or traditional brake drums and shoes. Modern braking systems can also incorporate ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), electronic stability systems, brake-wear sensors and electronic parking brakes.
All of these components need to work together correctly – and because many braking components gradually wear through normal use, regular inspection is important.
Signs Your Brakes May Need Attention
Brake problems don’t always appear suddenly. Your car will often give you some warning that something isn’t quite right.
You should have your brakes checked if you notice:
- Squealing or grinding noises when braking
- Vibration or juddering through the brake pedal or steering wheel
- A soft, spongy or unusually firm brake pedal
- The vehicle pulling to one side under braking
- An increase in stopping distance
- A brake or ABS warning light appearing on the dashboard
- The handbrake or electronic parking brake not holding correctly
- A noticeable change in the way the vehicle feels when braking
Some brake noises can have relatively minor causes, but grinding, significantly reduced braking performance or a warning light should never simply be ignored.
Brake Pads and Discs
Brake pads are designed to wear and will eventually require replacement. How quickly that happens depends on the vehicle, mileage and driving conditions. Frequent urban driving, for example, generally involves considerably more braking than long motorway journeys.
Brake discs also wear over time and can become scored, corroded, warped or fall below the manufacturer’s specified minimum thickness.
When inspecting your brakes, we’ll assess the condition of the relevant components rather than simply replacing parts unnecessarily. If work is required, we’ll explain what we’ve found and what we recommend.
Don’t Forget the Brake Fluid
Brake fluid is another important part of the system that’s easily overlooked.
It transfers the force from your brake pedal through the hydraulic system to the brakes themselves. Over time, brake fluid can absorb moisture, reducing its boiling point and potentially affecting braking performance under demanding conditions.
That’s why brake-fluid condition and replacement intervals form an important part of proper vehicle maintenance.
