Your vehicle’s transmission has the demanding job of transferring power from the engine to the wheels while allowing the engine to operate efficiently across different speeds and driving conditions. Whether your car has a manual or automatic gearbox, keeping the transmission and its associated components in good condition is essential for smooth, reliable driving.

Manual Gearboxes
A manual gearbox is designed to provide many thousands of miles of reliable service, but bearings, gears, seals, selector mechanisms and other internal or external components can wear or develop faults over time.
Problems can sometimes begin with relatively subtle symptoms. You may notice difficulty selecting a gear, increased noise, a gear jumping out of engagement or a change in the way the gear lever feels.
Oil leaks should also be investigated. Gearbox oil provides essential lubrication and protection, and operating a transmission with insufficient or deteriorated lubricant can lead to accelerated wear and potentially much more expensive damage.
Automatic Transmissions
Modern automatic transmissions can be sophisticated systems combining mechanical, hydraulic and electronic components. Depending on the vehicle, this can include conventional torque-converter automatics, dual-clutch transmissions and continuously variable transmissions (CVTs).
Warning signs can include hesitation when selecting Drive or Reverse, jerky or unusually harsh gear changes, slipping, unexpected changes in engine speed, transmission warning messages or fluid leaks.
Automatic transmission fluid can also play several roles, including lubrication, cooling and hydraulic operation. Where a manufacturer specifies transmission fluid and filter servicing, following the correct procedure and using fluid of the correct specification is particularly important.
Clutch Problems & Replacement
On a manual vehicle, the clutch allows the engine and gearbox to be temporarily disconnected so that you can stop and change gear smoothly. It is a wear component and will eventually require attention, although clutch life can vary enormously according to vehicle type, driving conditions and driving style.
Common symptoms of clutch wear or failure include:
- Engine speed rising without a corresponding increase in road speed
- Difficulty engaging or changing gear
- Juddering when pulling away
- An unusually high clutch biting point
- A heavy, light or inconsistent clutch pedal
- Rattling, squealing or other noises when operating the clutch
- Difficulty selecting first gear or reverse
Not every apparent clutch problem necessarily means that the complete clutch requires replacement. Hydraulic components, cables or linkages, release mechanisms and other associated parts can also cause problems, which is why proper diagnosis matters.
Where replacement is required, we’ll assess the associated components and advise you of anything else that should reasonably be addressed while the gearbox is removed.
Signs Your Transmission Needs Attention
Have your vehicle checked if you experience difficulty changing gear, slipping, juddering, unusual noises, delayed engagement, fluid leaks, drivetrain vibration or a gearbox/transmission warning light.
A small leak, worn mounting or clutch-related fault can sometimes produce symptoms that appear to indicate a much more serious gearbox problem. Conversely, continuing to drive with a developing transmission fault can turn a relatively manageable repair into something considerably more expensive.
That’s why diagnosis should come before replacement.
