    Exhaust Systems

Your vehicle’s exhaust system does much more than simply reduce engine noise. It carries exhaust gases safely away from the engine and passenger compartment, helps control harmful emissions and plays an important part in maintaining engine performance and efficiency.

At JLE Autos in Gloucester, we can inspect, diagnose, repair and replace exhaust systems and their associated components on a wide range of makes and models. Whether your exhaust has become noticeably louder, you’ve spotted corrosion or a warning light has appeared on the dashboard, we can identify the cause and advise on the appropriate repair.

Signs Your Exhaust May Need Attention

Exhaust systems operate in demanding conditions. They are exposed to heat, moisture, road salt, dirt and debris, while constantly expanding and contracting as the vehicle heats up and cools down.

Common signs of an exhaust problem include::

    • Increased exhaust or engine noise
    • Rattling, knocking, hissing or blowing sounds
    • An exhaust that appears to be hanging lower than normal
    • Visible corrosion or damage
    • Unusual smells inside or around the vehicle
    • Reduced performance or increased fuel consumption
    • Excessive or unusual exhaust smoke
    • An engine management or emissions warning light
    • Failure to meet the required emissions standard during an MOT test

If something sounds different, it’s worth having it checked. A relatively minor leak or failed mounting can become a more significant problem if left unattended.

    Catalytic Converters

The catalytic converter is one of the most important components in a modern vehicle’s emissions-control system.

Located within the exhaust system, it converts harmful substances produced during combustion into less harmful gases before they leave the vehicle through the exhaust. A catalytic converter must reach a high operating temperature to work effectively and relies on the engine itself running correctly.

Catalytic converters can deteriorate, become contaminated, damaged or internally blocked. Importantly, a catalytic converter problem can sometimes be the result of another engine fault rather than the original cause.

    Exhaust Problems and Your MOT

The exhaust and emissions systems form an important part of the MOT inspection.

An exhaust that is insecure, excessively noisy or leaking significantly can result in an MOT failure. The vehicle must also meet the applicable emissions requirements, which vary according to factors including its age and fuel type.

An illuminated engine-management or emissions-related warning light can also be relevant to the MOT, depending on the vehicle and the nature of the warning.

If your vehicle has failed its MOT because of an exhaust or emissions problem, JLE Autos can investigate the fault and advise on the repairs required.

Exhaust Repairs & Replacement at JLE Autos

If your exhaust has become louder, you’ve noticed a rattle or blowing noise, an emissions warning light has appeared or you’re concerned about the condition of the system, bring your vehicle to JLE Autos in Gloucester.

We can inspect the exhaust system, diagnose faults and replace worn or damaged components where required, including exhaust sections, silencers, mountings, flexible sections and catalytic converters.

Most importantly, we’ll establish what is actually wrong and explain your options before carrying out additional work.

    Something Doesn’t Sound Right?

A change in exhaust noise is often one of the first indications that something needs attention. Having it checked early can help prevent a small problem developing into a more expensive repair.
