It’s a problem seen on thousands of cars and vans across the UK every year – headlights that gradually become yellow, dull or cloudy. Modern vehicles almost universally use polycarbonate (plastic) headlight lenses, which are lightweight and durable but susceptible to damage from prolonged exposure to sunlight, road salt, pollution and the elements.
As the original UV-protective coating breaks down, the plastic begins to oxidise, reducing the amount of light produced by the headlamps. Not only can this make your vehicle look older than it really is, but it can also affect night-time visibility and, in severe cases, contribute to an MOT failure if the light output is significantly impaired.
Fortunately, there are several ways to tackle cloudy headlights, ranging from inexpensive DIY solutions through to professional restoration or complete replacement.
1. Thorough Cleaning – The Cheapest Option
Before assuming the lenses need restoring, give them a proper wash using a quality car shampoo or a cleaner suitable for exterior plastics. Road grime, traffic film and general dirt can often make headlights appear more faded than they actually are.
2. Plastic Polish – Around £10–£20
If oxidation is only beginning to appear, a specialist plastic polish such as Meguiar’s PlastX Clear Plastic Cleaner & Polish can often restore much of the original clarity. The polish is applied using a clean microfibre cloth or foam applicator, worked into the lens and buffed off once dry. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
3. Headlight Restoration Kit – Around £20–£40
More severely weathered headlights may benefit from a dedicated restoration kit such as the Autoglym Headlight Restoration Complete Kit or Meguiar’s Ultimate Headlight Restoration Kit. These kits typically use progressively finer abrasive discs or pads to remove the oxidised outer layer before a UV-protective coating is applied. Following the manufacturer’s instructions carefully is essential, particularly the final protective coating, which helps prevent the problem returning prematurely.
Cloudy headlights aren’t just a cosmetic issue. They can reduce the amount of light reaching the road ahead, making driving at night or in poor weather more difficult. Restoring them not only improves your vehicle’s appearance but can also enhance safety and help avoid unnecessary MOT issues.
4. Professional Headlight Restoration
If DIY products haven’t achieved the desired results, professional restoration may be worthwhile. Specialist equipment and professional-grade protective coatings can often restore lenses that would otherwise appear beyond repair, providing a more durable finish than many home treatments.
5. Replacement – The Most Expensive Solution
If the headlamp lens is cracked, damaged internally or has deteriorated beyond restoration, replacement may be the only realistic option. Depending on the vehicle, replacement headlamp units can cost several hundred pounds each, making restoration a worthwhile first step wherever possible.
Preventing Future Clouding
Regular washing, occasional polishing and applying a suitable UV protectant after restoration can significantly extend the life of plastic headlight lenses. Where practical, parking in a garage or shaded area will also help reduce long-term UV exposure.
